Bull Moose
Back in 1912 Theodore Roosevelt was running for his third term under the Progressive Party. Just before giving one of his speeches, the Colonel (as he liked to be called) was shot. Theodore refused an ambulance saying (as he often did) “I’m as tough as a Bull Moose”, Teddy (a name no one called him in his presence) took the podium and have his speech.
Theodore Roosevelt was a bad ass- maybe not as willing to cane people as “Old Hickory”, but still the nickname stuck with the party, and progressivism became synonymous with the noble Bull Moose.
